PPE: Personal Protective Equipment.

Use

Back protector for motorcycle riding but maybe used for other activities where similar risks of impact occur. The protector offers limited protection from impact and abrasion in the event of an accident or fall from a motorcycle which may include impact and abrasion from the riding surface or impact with the motorcycle or conflicting vehicles and other objects. This back protector cannot guarantee protection against traumas caused by bending, twisting, torsions, or traumas caused by extreme movements and cannot prevent crushing as the result of striking an object.

Performance Recorded During Technical Testing

The performance level marked in the example pictogram shows a level of either 1 or 2, depending on the results obtained during impact attenuation tests. EN 1621-2: 2014 standard determines two protection levels, 1 or 2. When impact attenuation is tested the transmitted force shall be below the values expressed in the following tables. The protectors satisfy the requirements of Regulation EU 2016/425.

Level 1 Level 2
Overall mean value <18kN <9kN
Single strike <24kN <12kN

Sizing

EN 1621-2:2014 defines protector sizes by the length between the waist and shoulder. Make sure you have the correct size. Please note that a single back protector cannot fit all body dimensions.

Use with Other Garments

The protector may influence the performance and fit of other items of protective wear. Please make sure other items are appropriate to be worn with this garment. It is advised to combine this garment with appropriate helmets and other complementary garments in accordance with EN 17092:2020 and gloves with EN 13594:2015.

Restraint

The protectors should be centered over the area they are designed to protect and will either be held in place in a protector pocket or will be sewn directly to the garment shell. You must make sure the garment’s opening zip is securely fastened in order to hold the protectors in place and give the intended protection.

Care and Maintenance

Storage: Hang garment in a dry, ventilated environment, out of sunlight and away from direct heat sources. Do not leave on the floor or under heavy items – it may lead to the protectors becoming misshapen, ripped, or damaged in some way. Do not fold jacket or back protector in half as this may cause damage to the back protector. Keep away from chemical substances that could damage the material and lose its protective properties.

Maintenance: Regular inspection (at least annually) should be made to the impact protection and fitting system for obvious signs of wear or broken stitches. If either are found, the garment or protectors should be returned for professional inspection and repair. If the impact protectors are worn or damaged or there is any doubt as to their condition, they should be replaced immediately. It is advised that the protectors are replaced every 5 years regardless of condition. If the protectors have at any time received an impact due to an accident scenario, they should be replaced immediately.

Wash Care: Carefully remove protectors from the garment before washing. The protectors should be cleaned by hand wash only. If the protectors are sewn directly to the garment shell, please check the care label for exact garment washing instructions.

Suitable Constituent Materials

The materials used in the manufacturing for the protectors are resistant to all atmospheric and environmental conditions which can be expected. EN 1621-2:2014

Pictogram provided by EN 1621-2:2014 to indicate:

  • Protector size expressed by waist-to-shoulder length in cm
  • Use: motorcycling
  • Type of protector (FB: full back protector, CB: central back protector, LB: lower back protector)
  • Impact protection level (1 or 2)
  • Optional symbols T+ and/or T- to indicate that the protector can give protection even at high and/or low temperatures (impact tested in lab respectively at +40 °C and/or at -10°C). If the corresponding space is vacant the test is not claimed.

The Technical Reference Standard is displayed under the pictogram

LEVEL 1: impact force transmitted average value ≤18 kN; no single impact force transmitted shall exceed 24kN; this level gives a lower protection but the protector is more light and comfortable to wear for any kind of motorcycling activity.

LEVEL 2: impact force transmitted average value ≤9 kN; no single impact force transmitted shall exceed 12kN; this level gives a higher protection but the protector is heavier to wear and less comfortable.

It is very important for each rider to choose the correct level of protection according to the accident risks he faces, his driving style, and motorcycling discipline.

Materials and Manufacturing

All materials used (both natural or synthetic) as well as the applied processing techniques have been chosen to meet the requirements expressed by the European technical standards in terms of safety, ergonomics, comfort, solidity, and innocuousness.

This back protector for motorcycle riders offers protection only in the event of impacts against edges such as kerb stones. They may also reduce the incidence and severity of injuries.

Hazards Against Which Protection is NOT Given

This back protector cannot guarantee protection against traumas caused by bending, twisting, torsions, or traumas caused by extreme movements and cannot prevent crushing as the result of striking an object.

Warnings and Use Limitations

  • No protector can guarantee total protection from all possible impacts!
  • Vehicles riding is an inherently dangerous activity!
  • No back protector can prevent spinal injuries!
  • Always follow the specific use instructions of this back protector;
  • Do not use the protective device for other uses; improper handling may seriously reduce the protection provided;
  • This device provides limited protection in a specific area of the back as shown in the chapter entitled “Dimensions of the protected area;
  • For the temperature of use, it is recommended that the protector is not exposed to extremely high or low temperatures; climatic variations such as a dramatic/sudden increase of the temperature can considerably reduce the protection offered by the device.

Check Prior Use

Before using this protector, make sure it is in good condition. In case of visible damages like breaches, unstitching, etc., it shall be replaced.

The protector works properly only when in good condition and correctly positioned. The level of protection remains as long as the protectors keep their original characteristics. Therefore it is important that no modifications or repairs are made: do not tamper with your protectors!

If the fixing means consist of strips, straps, elastic bands, or other, they must be verified in their efficiency and sealing. If their closure is velcro, you should check for wear and tightness.

Performances

Laboratory tests confirm that the protector satisfies the requirements of the EN 1621-2:2014 European Technical Standard. The protection level is based on the impact force transmission performance. Method: impact testing at 50 J at standard ambient conditions repeated after hydrolytic (“wet”) treatment.

Optional tests (if claimed): at high temperature (+40°C) and/or at low temperature (-10°)

Level 1 Level 2
Mean value <18kN <9kN
Single strike <24kN <12kN

Care, Maintenance, Storage

  • Remove dirt with a damp cloth only.
  • Do not wash under running water.
  • Do not use solvents or other chemicals to clean the protector.
  • Do not leave exposed to direct sunlight
  • Do not leave it permanently exposed to high or low temperatures
  • Never tamper with the device in any of its parts.
  • Do not bend or twist the device; as such actions constitute an improper use for which the article was not designed; this may cause, in fact, the loss of the protecting characteristics or breakage.
  • When not in use, the protector must be stored in a dry and ventilated place
  • Avoid storing the device so that its own weight is concentrated in a few points of support.
  • After use, leave dry it in a ventilated place at room temperature; do not use dryer or other heating means.

When in doubt about the efficiency of the protector, it should be returned to the store for professional inspection. If the protector is damaged or if there is any doubt about its condition, it should be replaced immediately.

Complaints or replacement requests for which improper use has been established will not be accepted.

Fit & Ergonomics

In order to fully benefit from the protection offered by these back protectors, you should ensure that the fit of the garment meets the following criteria:

  • Be sure that the impact protectors are placed over the areas they are designed to protect.
  • No discomfort is caused by the garment when you are in your usual riding position and that you are easily able to reach controls: do not choose a protector that is too big as this could interfere with the helmet creating dangerous driving conditions;

If the device is an integral part of the garment or is inserted in a special pocket, its correct positioning depends on a right GARMENT size choice from those proposed by the manufacturer. It is important to wear the garment in your size and close all the fastenings. It is also important to tighten the waistbelt securely so that the protector remains firmly in place during use.

It is advised to wear the back protector close to the body and ideally over a T-shirt. In all cases, means are provided to maintain the device effectively in contact with the body. It is advised to regularly check the Velcro fastening to ensure that a secure fit can be maintained.
