Experienced Technical Product & Accessories Designer

Knox are looking for a dynamic and experienced designer to be based in their East London design office.

Knox are a well-established motorcycle equipment brand that design and produce innovative and modern clothing, protection, gloves and other accessories for the motorcycle market.

Knox are based between their head office in the Lake District and their East-London design studio.

This role will suit a versatile multi-disciplined designer, with a proven track record of bringing collections together and making good decisions.

Hours: Permanent full-time role, 40 hours per week. 4 days office based, 1 day worked from home

The role will involve but is not exclusive to:

  • Working with the Design Director and Apparel Designer, to plan, design and develop new products for new collections. This would include initial research, the entire product development process, through to production and presentation to market.
  • Working closely with the full design team to ensure all products reach design and safety standards, reach production schedules on time and in perfect order.
  • Being able to handle multiple and technical projects at the same time across sports gloves, luggage, trims and accessories, armour and 3D, with occasional crossover into the clothing range.
  • Using resourceful and creative research methods to establish new moods and direction for new collections.
  • Developing and sourcing new materials and trims appropriate for the intended product.
  • Working closely with suppliers and factories on product development, cost negotiation, managing lead times, MOQ’s and reporting to the full team. Collaborating closely with overseas factories, maintaining communication via in-person meetings, email, Teams and telephone.
  • Creating in depth drawings for new products and working with the full design team to create all new Technical Files.
  • Ensuring all continuing products are updated as necessary alongside new developments.
  • Checking and commenting on samples ensuring everything looks as it should, making design amends, ensuring the fit is correct and effectively communicating with suppliers.
  • Working with testing labs and being able to learn any new areas quickly. Creating technically sound CE approved products is vital for most of the products we produce.
  • Presenting new products and concepts effectively and actively listening to and applying constructive feedback.
  • Preparing for and attending regular design meetings, weekly critical path meetings and monthly production meetings in order to update the team of sampling progress, critical path alterations, and troubleshooting to ensure timings are kept on track.
  • Applying good construction knowledge and instinct to ensure designs are not just “good on paper” but actually work and can be well produced.
  • Proficiently working in all design programs, especially Adobe Illustrator and InDesign and in 3D design software.
  • Keeping an organized archive of all sample development, fabrics, trims and accessories.
  • Willingness to travel to our Head Office and on other business trips as and when required.

The Candidate should have/be:

  • A minimum of 5-10 years’ experience in relevant roles.
  • Excellent technical knowledge, a good understanding of manufacturing processes and of all duties listed above.
  • A proactive mindset in mastering new skills required to complete the job.
  • Organised, self-motivated, have good attention to detail, a flexible attitude and a strong work ethic.
  • Capable of working in a small team. Being a self-starter and being comfortable taking the lead and taking initiative is crucial.
  • Excellent literacy and strong communication skills.
  • Essential Adobe Illustrator and InDesign skills along with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • A love of technical sports products, specifically motorbikes/bikes/sportswear would be desirable.
  • A versatile multi-product designer who has the ability and enthusiasm to work across technical sports gloves, luggage, trims and accessories, armour and 3D, with occasional crossover into the clothing range.
