It’s no fun being cold on a motorcycle but many riders will be surprised to learn that it could be potentially fatal, due to the effects of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a condition in which your normal body temperature of 37°C (98.6°F) drops below 35° (95°F). It’s usually caused by being in a cold environment, but is also possible in mild weather, for example, if you get soaked in a rain shower and do not dry off properly. Wind chill often accelerates the onset of hypothermia, because the water evaporating from your skin brings down your body temperature. At just 30 km/h (less than 20mph) the wind-chill effect can reduce the external temperature by over 10°C, so it’s easy to understand how vulnerable motorcyclists are to this condition
Stay Safe and Warm this Winter with Cold Killers
According to NHS Direct, the symptoms of moderate hypothermia include “inability to think or pay attention to events, confusion (some people don’t realise they are affected), fumbling hands, and drowsiness” any or all of which could have fatal consequences when trying to control a motorcycle.
However, there are some simple precautions that motorcyclists can take to protect themselves from hypothermia. Reliable waterproof outer clothing, including gloves and boots, combined with an effective layer of wind proof under clothing will dramatically reduce the chilling effects of wind and rain. Cold Killers by Knox has a fantastic reputation and gets a distinctive new look for 2007.

The incredibly comfortable Cold Killers 3D+ fabric is now used on all products in the range. 3D+ is windproof and breathable, with a check-fleece on the inside that allows better air circulation, to prevent sweating. This is important because if you sweat on a cold day the moisture can accelerate hypothermia.

First to be released are the Sport Top and Pants, which are tailored for a more sculptured appearance that is enhanced by the silver/grey piping. There is a full length zipper on the left side, so the Sport Top is easy to put on and Knox has added a quarter length zip from the collar on the right side, so that the front section can be opened once the wearer arrives at a warm destination. The Sport Top II and matching Sport Pants sell for £49.99 and £39.99 respectively in sizes S – XXL.

The Sport Top & Pants will be followed shortly by re-designed gloves, socks, neck tubes and balaclava, all of which offer a closer fit, so that they won’t bunch up underneath outer clothing.

With many motorcycle clothing and accessory companies jumping on the wind proof clothing bandwagon, Cold Killers stands out. It looks better and fits better but remains at an affordable price.
Cold killers top only £59.99
Cold Killers has a proven track record and is currently undergoing extreme testing by two British motorcyclists who are riding around the world.

Adam Lewis and Danny Burroughs are riding around the world on a pair of BMW F650 motorcycles (you can read about their exploits every month in Fast Bikes magazine). Planet-Knox supplied them with Cold Killers wind proof clothing for their trip, and this is what they have to say so far.
“This is the first time either of us have used Cold Killers gear and we are mightily impressed. Our BMW Rallye suits have Goretex liners but the outers are full of ventilation zips for the hot weather. Wearing Cold Killers underwear with BMW heated vests we were able to ride up to 400miles a day across Western Europe, surrounded by 2metres of snow. In Southern Croatia we were able to pack away the heated vests and used the Cold Killer gear all the way to Istanbul. We expect it to reappear perhaps in the Hindu Kush and Karakoram regions of Northern Pakistan or the Himalayan region of Ladakh, Northern India.”
