  • Knox offer riders a wide choice of back protectors for riders on road, track or dirt so whatever and wherever you ride, don’t forget your Knox.

Once again Knox is an official partner to the THINK! Motorcycle Academy, which offers practical advice on riding, equipment and safety from industry experts, training organisations and racers. THINK!, the Department for Transport’s (DfT) road safety initiative, has signed up for a fifth consecutive year as a sponsor of the 2008 Bennetts British Superbike (BSB) Championship. The season will see a re-launched, interactive THINK! Motorcycle Academy, on-site at every BSB race and experts from Knox will be attending at most rounds.

The THINK! Motorcycle Academy is clear about the benefits of back protectors. According to the website (www.dft.gov.uk/thinkmotorcycleacademy); “Back protectors absorb energy from an impact, like a car’s crumple zone. They protect the spine and also help to prevent damage to internal organs, like the kidneys, which can be harmed by a heavy external blow. When buying a back protector make sure it meets the latest standards and carries the CE mark.”

In support of the THINK! motorcycle safety campaign, John Reynolds gives some advice on how to get the best out of your motorcycling summer…

“It’s that exhilarating time of year, when you’re starting to get your motorbike out of the garage and back on the roads. But don’t bank on being to the standard you were at the end of last summer, give yourself time to get used to your motorbike again”.

Take responsibility for keeping yourself safe…
“You should check your motorbike before each trip out anyway, but make it extra thorough if it’s been parked up for a couple of months over the winter. The tyre pressures will need topping up, chains may need adjusting, ensure there’s oil in the engine and enough meat on the brake pads”. “Make sure you’ve got the safest kit you can afford”.

Give your bike the skills it deserves…
“An advanced rider training course will enhance your skills, plus the more you ride, the better you’ll become. You should feel comfortable on your motorbike, you’ll be able to adjust the position of the rear brake, clutch levers etc. to suit you. If you’re unsure, you could also book on a BikeSafe course, the Police don’t lecture you, they just give you great advice. It’s valuable having professionals to help and assist you – these guys ride all day everyday!”

    Save racing for the track…
“When riders are out there on the track they have lots of things to keep them safe. There’s usually a hospital and an ambulance not more than half a mile away and the track is surrounded by very experienced marshals with warning flags. You don’t have those reassurances on the road! If you want to take your motorbike to a racetrack, you can book on a track day. It gives you the space and time to test your brakes and corner handling etc.”

Named after the mythological protective shield of Zeus, king of the Greek Gods, the new AEGIS back protector is the result of an intensive 12-month R & D programme.

Statistics show that over 25% of injuries to motorcyclists rated ‘maximum’ or ‘critical’ (the ones that cause crippling injuries or death) affect the spine yet there are still a significant proportion of riders unwilling to use a back protector. So the design team at Knox concentrated on tackling comfort, safety and style to resolve the issues raised by riders as significant factors when choosing a back protector. By developing solutions to these issues Knox have produced the most technically advanced and user-friendly back protector available today.

EUROPEAN REPORT HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF BACK PROTECTORS

    Release Date July 2004

All professional motorcycle racers wear back protectors, but do you need to wear one for road riding? Information from a recent European report shows that the answer is YES! The motorcycle industry, represented in Europe by ACEM (the association of European motorcycle manufacturers) has conducted a major in-depth research project to help understand the causes and effects of motorcycle accidents. The Report (called MAIDS) put injuries resulting from motorcycle accidents into six categories (this is the standard AIS system used by accident investigators). The categories are minor, moderate, serious, severe, critical and maximum. Maximum is usually fatal!

    • 5% of injuries (other than minor) affected the Spine.

    • 20% of spinal injuries were severe or worse.

    • 10% of spinal injuries were critical.

Amazingly, a higher proportion of spinal injuries were critical than injuries to any other body part, including head, neck or thorax.
“The MAIDS Report proves once and for all that, after a helmet, a back-protector is the most important piece of safety equipment a rider can invest in. It might just save your life!” said a spokesman for Planet-Knox, specialists in impact protection for motorcyclists.

    KNOX RICOCHET BODY BELTS
    Release Date February 2005

Body belts are a popular accessory for riders competing in off road sport, trail riding or traveling long distances on the road. However, few of the products marketed for motorcyclists are actually designed for the purpose (most are sports supports) and even fewer are CE approved, to offer the wearer protection from impacts.

So Knox, the British impact protection specialists, have developed these CE-approved body belts, based on their popular Ricochet back protector. The belt itself is fully adjustable, whatever your waist line, with extra adjustment at the sides to pull the support tight into the lower back. Inside the waistband is an anti-bacterial sports fabric, which keeps the wearer cool & dissipates sweaty odours. Protection is provided by shock absorbing plates on the reverse, which can stand repeated impacts. The Ricochet body belts are produced in two sizes and are ideal for use in conjunction with jackets fitted with back plates in the lining.

    KNOX STOWAWAY RSK

British protection specialists Planet-Knox have launched their lightest and most comfortable back-protector to date. Derived from their award-winning Stowaway, which was the first ever CE approved back protector that could be rolled up and stashed in its own sports bag, the Stowaway RSK was developed during 2004 in conjunction with Rizla Suzuki rider Yukio Kagyama.

Comfort is big important to me and Knox protectors are very comfortable, I do not notice under my leathers,” explains Yukio.

The Stowaway RSK is constructed from a honeycomb material that can absorb massive amounts of energy from an impact, yet is very light. Hence the new model weighs 550 grams yet comfortably exceeds latest European CE standard for back-protectors (1621-2). Other revisions include increased coverage over scapula, kidneys & liver and a Coolmax fabric backing, with anti-bacterial finish. This keeps the wearer cool & dissipates sweaty odours and covers the waistband as well.

A neat addition is the revised strap system – the shoulder straps can be crossed over at the waistband, for extra comfort.

    INNOVATIVE SPINE-HUGGING BACK-PROTECTOR FROM KNOX
    Release Date March 2005

Planet Knox, the British impact protection specialists, have launched their most innovative back protector to date. The Contour, which is ergonomically shaped to hug the spine, sets new standards in terms of comfort, lightness & protection.

The Knox Contour looks different from other back-protectors and that’s because it is. The Contour is the first back-protector to be S-shaped, following the contour of the spine, (hence the name). It weighs just 600g, making it one of the lightest back protectors on the market, yet offers maximum coverage of the back area, including side impact panels.

Generous use of honeycomb polypropylene cells mean that the Contour transmits only 6KN of energy, a very comfortable 30% below the 9kN threshold permitted for level 2 protectors under the new European EN1621-2 back-protector standard. Additional protection is provided by a covering of tear & abrasion resistant Schoeller® Dynatec material down the centre.

Knox have paid great attention to comfort on this flagship product. The inside and waistband are covered with L System fabric, which incorporates Coolmax® for temperature control and Amicor™ antibacterial fibre, which reduces odours from perspiration, and the inside back area is covered with Schoeller® Comfortemp PCM which absorbs excess heat.
